Editing, proofreading, checking of mistakes
Depending on the purpose, there are used several different ways of editing, which also have different names.
Editing
For the purpose of linguistic editing, a language specialist is appointed for whom the target language of the translation recommendably is his mother tongue, i.e. a native speaker. Thereby an idiomatic use of the language and the correctness of the translation are ensured.
Technical, specialty editing means that the correspondence of the translation with the original text is checked, in order to make sure that the idea of the original text has been conveyed correctly and logically and that the use of terminology is consistent and appropriate. Usually the editor is well-experienced or a learned specialist in the according special field; more rarely is it a philologist with long-time translation experience in this particular field.
Proof-reading
means that the text is read for the purpose of having spelling mistakes corrected and ensuring the correspondence of the translation with the original text, linguistic correctness and comprehensiveness of the content. The corrector knows both, the original and the target language, and is a philologist with long-time translation experience.
Checking of mistakes
means that the text is read for spelling mistakes to be corrected.
